Instead, they told him to go to college
to make good grades, and now he is
a believer in the works and theories
of Albert Einstein, Charles Darwin
a believer in the writings of Edgar Alan Poe, Adolf Hitler
a believer in the speeches of Harry S. Truman,
Franklin D. Roosevelt
but a believer in God?
he knows about the feminist movement,
civil rights movement,
holocaust and slavery.
he knows how to research, analyze, study
he took subjects like biology, political science,
computer applications and romanticism,
but has he ever read the Bible?
he's not interested, yet they told him to pray
a dark poet, a lost child, a jobless graduate,
he has left behind broken-hearted girlfriends and boyfriends
he can't pick and he won't choose.
he thinks, "United States of America, born free"
a society based on the principals of white men
somewhere they mentioned God,
but who cares.

and they still want him to pray
